MARKETS works with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) to provide policy-related support to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources (FMAWR). Through the Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System (SAKSS), MARKETS and IFPRI help address the research, analysis and capacity needs of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to boost the agricultural sector and expand the market supply of essential staple food crops, thereby generating revenue for exports and improving food security.

MARKETS policy component aims to:

• Improve the data and information base in Nigeria with which to analyze policy

• Draw on action research and implementation to bridge gaps in knowledge

• Strengthen national capacity for practical, applied policy research that informs agricultural and food security strategies and policies.

Our work in agricultural policy research is helping the government of Nigeria to create the environment necessary for making agriculture more competitive. We do this by:

• Providing technical support to the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP)

• Providing analytic support for designing Nigeria’s agriculture strategy

• Conducting research studies on the supply and demand for improved seed, the delivery of quality fertilizer, and public and private investment in irrigation.
